Upcoming Events12th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Women's Memorial
The Women’s Memorial annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 4 p.m., May 25, 2009. The ceremony, one of the major Memorial Day programs in the nation’s capital, is free and open to the public and includes formal military honors, a keynote address, wreath-layings and the Memorial’s signature event, the scattering of rose petals in tribute to departed comrades. Members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program. Also at the Memorial for Memorial Day commemorative activities are two special exhibits that pay tribute to the women who have lost their lives in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The first is the Fallen Military Women Quilt exhibit, an exhibit made by citizens of Moro, Oregon, and loaned to the Memorial in tribute to these fallen heroes. The second is the special In-Memoriam Book located in the Memorial’s Hall of Honor. The book, a living memorial that is updated as necessary, includes the picture, awards and decorations and biographical information of the 120 fallen women who have lost their lives in these wars. The exhibits are free and open to the public.
For more information, call 703-533-1155 or 800-222-2294. The Women’s Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, is readily accessible by Metro (Blue Line) and paid parking is available.
"Lioness" to Participate in Film Festival
We are pleased to announce that the award winning documentary “Lioness” will be among the films participating in this year’s annual GI Film Festival, May 13-17, in Washington, DC. “Lioness” tells the story of a group of Army women who were part of the first program in American history to send women into direct ground combat. Capturing an historical turning point for the US military, it is the first film to bridge the gap between perception and reality of the role military women are playing in Iraq. This powerful film previewed at the Women’s Memorial in June 2008 (read about it here) and later, nationwide, on PBS's Independent Lens program. For more information about this incredible documentary, visit the film's Web site . Or read more about the upcoming GI Film Festival.Massachusetts Conference for Women Veterans

As Memorial Day approaches, the Foundation would like to remind our readers of the National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day, May 25 at 3 p.m. Established by the White House Commission on Remembrance, the Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our Nation. Suggested observance activities include a moment of reflection; the playing of a patriotic song; or ringing a bell. As was expressed by a participant, “At 3 p.m. on every Memorial Day, for just a few seconds, a connection exists between every soldier who has died fighting for freedom - and those countrymen who live enjoying that freedom.” We hope you are able to join in this nationwide moment of remembrance.Branson Women Veterans Week Cancelled
